She who pwns people with history
On July 15th, 1799, the Rosetta Stone was discovered by French soldiers that were part of Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt.
It was part of a stele inscribed with a decree that was issued by Ptolemy V, the fifth Pharaoh of the Ptolemaic Dynasty.
It is written in three different scripts. The bottom is in Ancient Greek, which was the official language used by the Ptolemaic Dynasty. The middle portion is written in Demotic script. The top part is written in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The text is almost exactly the same in all three versions, with only a few minor differences. Since scholars already knew how to read Ancient Greek, the stone proved to be the key to deciphering Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Here is an English translation of what is written on it, courtesy of the British Museum, which is where the stone is now on display.
