She who pwns people with history

Happy Birthday today, July 15th, to Louise Marie de France. Born in 1737, she was the youngest of ten children born to Louis XV and Maria Leszczyńska. Known as Madame Septieme and Madame Derniere, later simply as Madame Louise, she was raised at the Abbey of Fontevraud with three of her sisters.

She returned to Versailles at the age of 13, where she would live for 20 more years. She never married and shocked the court by asking her father to allow her to become a Carmelite nun in 1770. Louise joined the convent at Saint Denis, giving her vows and being fully accepted into the order in 1771. She took the name of Thérèse of Saint Augustine.

Louise became Prioress of the convent in 1773, serving two terms in that position. She was visited by her nephew, Louis XVI, shortly after her father’s death and his ascension to the throne.

She died on December 23rd, 1787, after suffering from stomach pains. Her last words were reported to be “To heaven! Quickly! At the gallop!”
